HOLY SEE TO U.N. GENERAL ASSEMBLY'S SPECIAL SESSION ON HIV/AIDS

Pope John Paul II - Message to the U.N. Secretary General
On 21 June 2001, the Holy Father sent this Message to Mr Kofi Annan, Secretary General of
the United Nations Organization, focusing on two problems: the transmission of HIV/AIDS from mother to child in Africa, and the high cost of treatment, beyond the means of developing
countries.

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin - Statement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual
Property Rights
On 20 June 2001, during the meeting of the Council for Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual
Property Rights of the World Trade Organization in Genoa, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, the
Holy See's Permanent Observer to the WTO, gave all the members of the meeting an English
text presenting the Holy See's position. The Holy See called for mechanisms that will allow the pharmaceutical industry to offer medicines at affordable prices for poor countries.

On Wednesday, 27 June 2001, Archbishop Javier Lozano Barragan, President Of the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Assistance of Health Care Workers, Head of the Holy See Delegation to the 26th Special Session of the General Assembly, gave the following address.

Delegation of Holy See - Final Statement to 26th Special Session of General Assembly
On 27 June 2001, at the conclusion of the Special Session of the U.N. General Assembly on
HIV/AIDS, the Holy See's Delegation issued in English this final statement on the declaration
released at the end of the session. The Holy See supports the positive steps to address the
needs of those whose lives have been ravaged by the disease. However, it expresses certain
reservations.
